0036: Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, Battle Beyond the Stars, Starcrash

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinema screens across the world this week, so we go back to where it all began with a thorough examination of 1977’s Star Wars, and two films that attempted to ape its success, and got it spectacularly wrong.

0035: Star Wars & Rip-offs Preview Week

0035: Star Wars & Rip-offs Preview Week

In a galaxy far, far away nothing is probably happening, but right here we’re watching A New Hope and 2 ripoffs because pretty soon there’s a new Star Wars film out, and that is still an exciting thing!

Also Alex brings the best quiz we’ve had yet, even if he doesn’t realise how famous the Gonk droid is. Gonk.

0034: Stargate, Independence Day, 2012

0034: Stargate, Independence Day, 2012

We revisit Independence Day and provide a definitive ranking for (probably) the most divisive film on the list.  Why is it is so bad? The wafer thin plot? The hideous level of AMURICA? The grating attempts at a deeper meaning? And who writes these podcast notes anyway?

(We also watched two other films by Roland Emmerich that were also pretty terrible)

0033: Emmerich/Devlin Axis of Destruction Preview Show

0033: Emmerich/Devlin Axis of Destruction Preview Show

We’re back! Out of chronosleep, back from the nth Dimension, season 2 of SFRS starts with not one bang, but ALL THE BANGS as we get into three films from Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin that involve the world blowing up. And space Egypt. We also definitively decide that Alex isn’t as into this stuff as Chris was, Chris was all the way into Indepedence Day, and Sam is definitely not a racist.

Watch along with the trailers below and join us next week as we add our 60th film to the ranking!

Stargate

0030: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, War of the Worlds (2005), A.I. Artificial Intelligence

Close Encounters is re-released on 4K blu-ray so we rate it, along with two other Spielberg sci-fi joints.  Its a rare week of unity in the pod as we unanimously agree on a ranking straight off the bat for (i think?) the first time ever, and generally enjoy a week with three actual competently main films.

Next time we preview three franchises that started life on tv, so tune in for that.

0028: The Guyver, The Rocketeer, Terminator 2: Judgement Day

0028: The Guyver, The Rocketeer, Terminator 2: Judgement Day

The year is 1991, and science fiction is big business. Arnie comes back, Mark Hamill’s career hits rock bottom, and Disney fail at making a billion dollar franchise.  This week’s films are a diverse selection of sci-fi and there’s something for everyone. Probably.

PS when Sam keeps saying ‘The four horsemen’ he meant ‘The Lone Gunmen’ !
