0064: Star Trek V: The Final Frontier

Our journey through the history of Star Trek on the silver screen reaches its nadir, with William Shatner’s atrocious Star Trek V. Spoilers: We didn’t like it, but of course we didn’t because who does?  Join us as we struggle to find a positive, wonder how the Enterprise crew has not been court-martialed by now and try our best to forget Uhura’s dance.

Next week a film none of us have ever seen, Old Disney’s forgotten stab at sci-fi relevance Treasure Planet! Watch a trailer here!

0063: Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure

This week we stick with comedy and a trip back to the late ’80s, where the clothes were baggy, the music was radical and the casual homophobia was a shock. Join us as we travel through time and wonder did they really does say what we thought they said??

Next week we continue our Star Trek odyssey, biting the bullet watching Star Trek V: The Final Frontier because I guess we have to one day! Lame.  Watch a trailer here

0062: Muppets From Space

0062: Muppets From Space

Following weeks’ of big serious blockbusters we veer into the realms of ’90s comedy with the film that killed the Muppets for a decade- Muppets From Space! We talk a lot about muppets, answering such hot button issues as our favourite muppet, favourite muppet movie and favourite idea for a muppet tv spin off. Also we spend a long time quoting Renfro the bear. THE GOAT?!

Next week we continue to mine the softest of soft sci-fi with Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure, watch a trailer here!

0061: Jurassic Park

0061: Jurassic Park

They say life finds a way and so, like a chaotic fractal blooming into the infinite the SFRS crew finally get back to Jurassic Park, the final of the ‘pilot’ episode films to get a rewatch.  This time we each bothered to watch it and so have a lot to say about park safety, the feasibility of a graphics heavy OS, and the concept of Peak Spielberg.

0060: 2001: A Space Odyssey

0060: 2001: A Space Odyssey

This week we watch 2001, chosen by Matt Fitch, co-author of the fantastic new graphic novel Apollo, in stores now! We break down the film, Alex proposes an extra act break, and then when it comes to the all important ranking the pod erupts in all-out war.  Not since Ghost in the Shell has a film proved quite so divisive. Will the gang manage to reach a ranking, or is a certain co-host so angry that this is the end of SFRS as we know it?  Tune in for more drama than you can probably find in the film itself!

0059: Westworld

0059: Westworld

Westworld is big news again thanks to the HBO series currently airing its 2nd season, but how well does the 1973 original hold up? Is Yul Brynner still terrifying? Is it going to be as painfully slow as most painful sci-fi? And why was Sam so sure the robots had white blood?  All these answers and more on this weeks pod!

Next week we watch 2001, check out a trailer here!

0058: Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

0058: Indiana Jones & The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

A new era of Science Fiction Ratings has dawned! From here on in its one film a week, every week, with more hard-hitting analysis, nit-picking and Star Trek references than ever before!

To kick off SFRS 2.0 we revisit Indiana Jones’ unfortunate brush with science fiction, contemplate what dirt George Lucas has on Steven Spielberg and put forward a case for this film being responsible for everything that’s wrong with modern cinema.

Next week is Westworld, check out the trailer here!

0057: The Re-Ranking I – WALL-E, Ender’s Game, Ghost in the Shell (1995)

0057: The Re-Ranking I – WALL-E, Ender’s Game, Ghost in the Shell (1995)

Hey here’s three films you’ve seen before if you’ve been following along at home! But we just weren’t happy with where they were in the list and Alex is a masochistic who likes Ender’s Game so we watched these three films again, and then argued about where they should be in the list. And then we watch a trailer because Preview Shows are DEAD and we are in the future where we watch one film a week and send your humble podcast editor into a meltdown because we’re recording bits in the future, and bits in the past and how it all pieces together is a NIGHTMARE.

Anyway, enjoy!

0056: The Re-Ranking I Preview Show

0056: The Re-Ranking I Preview Show

Join us for an end of an era, as the last three films of SFRS mark one are reviewed. We head back in time to look at the films we’ve each selected for our annual re-ranking process.  Sam regrets his choice, Alex didn’t think his would be so controversial, and Chris doesn’t write (or probably read) these introductions and so clearly made a bad choice.

We also get into what’s changing about the pod, and how YOU can shape the future!

0055: Black Sheep, Man’s Best Friend, The Island of Dr. Moreau (1996)

CREATURE FEATURE SEASON CONCLUDES! And we actually manage to get through three films without having to invoke the Poppins Clause.  Killer sheep from New Zealand, killer dogs from the US, and batshit Marlon Brando from an island in the South Pacific, this week’s podcast is so explosive the entire pod will never be the same again….DUN DUN DUNNNNNNN
